Gardeners Lamorbey Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Lamorbey is committed to providing professional gardening services delivered with the highest standards of health and safety. This policy sets out our approach to managing risk, protecting people and property, and ensuring that all work is carried out in a safe and responsible manner.
Our Health and Safety Commitment
We aim to prevent injury, ill health and damage arising from our gardening activities. Health and safety considerations are integrated into every stage of planning and delivering our services. All staff, contractors and others working on our behalf are expected to follow this policy and any related procedures.
Responsibilities
The management of Gardeners Lamorbey has overall responsibility for health and safety within the business. This includes setting standards, providing resources, and reviewing performance. Supervisors are responsible for implementing this policy on site, ensuring that work is planned and carried out safely.
All employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Staff must follow instructions, use equipment correctly, and report hazards, accidents or near misses without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before starting work at any site, we assess the potential risks associated with the gardening tasks to be carried out. This includes considering terrain, access routes, weather conditions, public presence and any site-specific hazards such as uneven ground, ponds, overhead obstructions or restricted spaces.
Appropriate control measures are then put in place, which may include the selection of suitable tools and machinery, the use of personal protective equipment, safe systems of work and supervision requirements. Method statements or site instructions are communicated clearly to all team members.
Training and Competence
We ensure that our gardeners are competent to carry out their duties safely. Staff receive induction training covering general health and safety rules, emergency procedures and safe handling of tools and equipment. Additional task-specific training is provided where required, for example in the safe operation of power tools, hedge trimmers, lawn mowers and other machinery.
Only trained and authorised personnel may operate specialist equipment or undertake higher-risk activities such as working at height, handling powered machinery or using chemical products. Training is refreshed periodically and whenever there are changes in equipment, legislation or company procedures.
Personal Protective Equipment
Gardeners Lamorbey provides personal protective equipment suitable for the work being undertaken. This may include safety footwear, gloves, high-visibility clothing, eye and hearing protection, respiratory protection and weather-appropriate clothing.
Staff are required to wear and maintain this equipment as instructed. Any defects or damage must be reported immediately so that items can be repaired or replaced. Personal protective equipment is regarded as a last line of defence and does not replace the need for careful planning and safe systems of work.
Tools, Machinery and Plant
All tools and machinery used by Gardeners Lamorbey are selected for suitability, maintained in good working order and inspected regularly. Pre-use checks are carried out by operatives, and any defects identified result in equipment being taken out of use until repaired or replaced.
Machines are used in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant safety guidance. Guards, safety switches and other protective features must not be removed or bypassed. Fuel, oils and batteries are stored, transported and disposed of safely and responsibly.
Manual Handling and Physical Wellbeing
Gardening work often involves lifting, carrying and repetitive movements. To reduce the risk of strain and injury, we promote safe manual handling techniques and the use of appropriate lifting aids where practical. Heavy or awkward loads are shared between team members or mechanically assisted where possible.
Staff are encouraged to work at a sensible pace, take appropriate rest breaks and report any discomfort or symptoms related to musculoskeletal issues early, so that work methods can be reviewed and adjusted.
Use of Chemicals and Hazardous Substances
Where the use of fertilisers, herbicides or other chemical products is necessary, Gardeners Lamorbey follows safe handling and application procedures. Products are selected carefully, and less hazardous alternatives are preferred where feasible.
All substances are stored, transported, mixed and applied in line with safety data and legal requirements. Staff using such products receive appropriate training and wear suitable protective equipment. Measures are taken to prevent contamination of watercourses, neighbouring properties, wildlife habitats and domestic areas.
Working Around Clients, the Public and Neighbours
We recognise our responsibility to protect clients, visitors, neighbours and members of the public who may be affected by our work. Work areas are planned to minimise disruption and risk, with clear communication about any temporary restrictions or hazards.
Where necessary, we use signage, barriers or cordons to create safe working zones, particularly when using powered machinery or working near pathways, driveways and communal spaces. Noise, dust and debris are controlled as far as reasonably practicable.
Working at Height
Some gardening activities, such as tree work, pruning and hedge cutting, may require working at height. We avoid working at height wherever possible by using long-reach tools or alternative methods. When it cannot be avoided, we use appropriate access equipment and follow safe procedures.
Ladders, platforms and other access systems are inspected, set up on stable ground and used according to recognised safety standards. Only competent staff are permitted to carry out tasks at height.
Environmental and Site Care
Health and safety for Gardeners Lamorbey also includes respect for the environment and the sites on which we work. Waste materials, including green waste and packaging, are managed responsibly and removed from site as required. We take care to avoid unnecessary damage to plants, lawns, structures and wildlife habitats.
Spillages or debris that may create slip or trip hazards are cleared promptly, and work sites are left in a tidy and safe condition at the end of each visit.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents and near misses are recorded and, where required, investigated. This helps us identify root causes and implement improvements to prevent recurrence. Staff are briefed on emergency procedures, including how to respond to injuries, fire, equipment failure or hazardous weather conditions.
First aid supplies are available on site or in vehicles, and at least one person in each working team will have basic first aid knowledge appropriate to the tasks being performed.
Monitoring, Review and Improvement
Gardeners Lamorbey reviews this Health and Safety Policy regularly to ensure it remains effective, relevant and aligned with current legislation and best practice. Feedback from staff, clients and other stakeholders is welcomed and used to improve our systems and procedures.
By following this policy, we aim to maintain a safe, healthy and respectful working environment for everyone involved in or affected by our gardening services.
